Hari Alam Sekitar Negara was an event organized by the Department of Environment (DOE), Ministry of Environment And Water. Held once per year within every state on the same date and the theme for year 2017 event was “The Environment is Everyone’s Responsibility”). The event was held in Plaza Alam Sentral Shah Alam and inaugurated by Y.B Puan Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping, Chairwoman of Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment Committee. Secret Recipe was delighted to be one of the event’s sponsors alongside Selangorku and Malaysian Resource Corporation Berhad (MRCB)where it sponsored 500 pcs of chocolate muffin to both participants and the public.

Trees are essential to all life on the planet, create the oxygen gas that we all breathe and also help filter it from substances that would damage our health. On 11 November 2017, Department of Environment Selangor invited Secret Recipe to be the guest of honour for this environmental event, which was a collaboration with Samsung Electronics Sdn Bhd and Klang Municipal Council. It took place at Klang Third Bridge and was inaugurated by the President of Klang Municipal Council. A total of 150 participants were involved in this event and up to 740 trees were planted as a result. This is part of Secret Recipe’s CSR programme to improve the environment in which we live in and thus should take ownership for it like we do for our own homes. We may live in houses but the environment is our home.

The Memorandum of Understanding is the agreement between Secret Recipe and the DOE, to express a convergence of will to follow the Environmental Quality Act 1974. It’s also an understanding in efforts to improve conservation and a commitment to conserve the environment through cooperation by the implementation of programs and environmental awareness activities.

Hari Bumi 2018

Hari Bumi is an event held annually like Hari Alam Sekitar. The difference though, is that Hari Bumi focuses on the young generation, like students and children for example. Hari Bumi 2018 was held at Sekolah Menengah Hillcrest Gombak, where the theme for this event was “Stop Plastic Pollution”. 7 members of Secret Recipe took part in this event and the company also sponsored MYR 7000 for this event along with 3 whole Walnut Brownies. The highlight of this event was encouraging the next generation to recycle their plastic waste and to bring their own reusable plastic containers or bags when buying things, to help reduce the need for plastic bags.

“Save Our Endangered Species” was the theme for the Hari Bumi 2019 Event, the focus being Bees and Tapir. The event was held at The Nahara, located at Kalumpang, Selangor. The main objective of the program was to raise awareness, among colleges and surrounding communities on environmental protection and issues such as recycling, ozone depletion, local temperature increase, flash floods, landslides and etc, along with social education for sustainable development. Secret Recipe contributed MYR 7484 for this event, which was inaugurated by YB Puan June Leow Hsiad Hui, Chairman of the Standing Committee on the Environment and organized by the Department of Environment.

Secret Recipe took part in Hari Alam Sekitar on 19/10/2019. The event was held in Plaza Alam Sentral, Shah Alam, and Secret Recipe sponsored cupcakes for both participants in the Enviro Race event and the public. The aim of the event is to increase awareness to the public on environmental concerns. Secret Recipe took part to help increase public relationship and publicity to show the company has interests in communal events involving the environment and how it also takes ownership and responsible action as well. E waste was also gathered to be donated to the E waste collection company T-Pot in order to register its place along with several other companies who were taking part as well. Other booths and events were also present to help increase awareness on various concerns including wildlife protection and schedule waste management. These were also taken into account by the company, as well as to establish connections with some of said groups in order to further expand possibilities to explore and consider in the future.

During September 2019, Secret Recipe also took part in a community service program hosted by Zoo Negara. A group of volunteers visited the zoo to take part in various activities to aid in its’ preparation before opening. Tasks the groups were involved in included cleaning the hippo enclosure, trimming shrubbery or landscaping such as planting new plants in certain areas. This was done, to strengthen our partnership with Zoo Negara.

During 25/2/2020, Secret Recipe was invited to share its current green practices and experience, which are being implemented at the company’s factory, with the children of Garden International School. The aim of this was to create awareness with the young children about the importance of sustainable practices as well as highlight our own green direction which may help inspire them to consider their own choices and actions more carefully as they may have indirect environmental impacts in another part of the world which they may not realise.

Rivers are one of the most important creations of universal life. Humans, animals, plants all need water for survival on earth. On the 27th of March 2021, Secret Recipe sponsored a program organized by the Department of Environment Selangor. The purpose of the program is to cultivate a love for our river. As Selangor often faced frequent water crises last year, such a program can provide awareness and in hope to open the eyes of those who are the irresponsible bodies behind the incident. The following program is also the result of a joint venture by Shah Alam City Council, Pro Lintas, Hartalega, Sime Darby & DARC horse. The program was held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. It has been inaugurated by the director of the Selangor Environment Department.

Plastic is a substance widely used everywhere. Plastic bags take up to 20 years to break down. A bottled drink will take up to 450 years or more to break down into microplastic. Even when broken down, it will leave chemicals and toxins behind which will harm the environment.
Hoping to change and create awareness among the public, Secret Recipe sponsored the Department of Environment Selangor for the “Kempen Hindari Plastik Sekali Guna” in conjunction with Earth Day. The event was held at Bazaar Ramadhan Stadium Shah Alam, Section 13. Around 300 pcs of reusable bags were given away to the public. With this activity, Secret Recipe hopes to instill the habit of using reusable bags and lessen the use of single-use plastic bags.

The Selangor State Department of Environment (JAS) has held several environmental awareness programs in conjunction with the 2023 Earth Day Celebration at the Selangor State Level. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 every year by people in 192 countries around the world. Year 2023 is the 53rd Earth Day celebration with a theme "Invest in Our Planet". This Earth Day celebration is one of the efforts to appreciate the earth and instill a sense of responsibility as well as increase the awareness and involvement of all levels of society towards the preservation and conservation of the environment. The programs that have been implemented on March 11, 2023 are the Recreational Garbage Collection Program and the Planting of Mangrove Trees with Environmental Partners (RAS).

On June 6, 2023, Secret Recipe had the privilege of attending the launch of the Petaling Jaya Landscape Master Plan (PiLAN PJ) book at The Spine @ PJKita in Jalan SS7/15, Petaling Jaya. This event marked a significant milestone in Petaling Jaya's journey towards becoming a sustainable and forward-thinking city. The PiLAN PJ book outlines the city's ambitious master plan, which is in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Petaling Jaya Smart, Sustainable, and Resilient 2030 Plan (PJSSR2030).


At Secret Recipe, we are proud to have been part of this momentous occasion, as it aligns with our own commitment to environmental and social responsibility. As the Senior Manager of Quality Assurance and ESH Manager, Stalin James Janum emphasized the importance of Secret Recipe's participation in the event. He stated that our involvement reflects Secret Recipe's alignment and planning for our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap.


The PiLAN PJ book encompasses various aspects of city development, with a focus on creating a smart, inclusive, and child-friendly city. It emphasizes the significance of sustainability by promoting low-carbon practices, entrepreneurship initiatives, and digitalization. The master plan aims to uplift the urban poor, foster economic growth, encourage a circular economy, and promote community 5.0 principles. Additionally, it seeks to enhance the city's safety and resilience through the implementation of e-administration systems.

Environmental awareness should be nurtured from a younger age. Doing activities such as clean-up activities, compost making workshops can help nurtured their interest in the environment and sustainable living. On Saturday 15th of July 2023 Secret Recipe collaborated to do a compost workshop activity with SMK Seksyen 18 Shah Alam. Secret Recipe has sponsored the equipment to carry out this program. 400 Cupcakes have been distributed to students to encourage them to do this activity. 5++ people have attended this program. It consists of students, parents, teachers and even head teachers. Secret Recipe greatly appreciates this effort in educating and giving encouragement in preserving the earth.

The Secret Recipe Exhibition with MBPJ, held from September 8th to September 10th at the Kaboom Festival located at Giant Kelana Jaya, was a success. Exhibitions like this aim to further strengthen the relationship between the community and customers while addressing any questions regarding the Secret Recipe collaboration with MBPJ. While MBPJ was conducting a Kebun Kita program for the community, Secret Recipe supported the program by volunteering to clean up the garden and donating some of our organic compost to it. Secret Recipe hopes that this collaboration can benefit more customers and the surrounding community.

During the Kaboom Event, Secret Recipe distributed 30 packets of organic compost and 160 plant starter kits to visitors. The Secret Recipe Plant Starter Kit is more than just a gardening kit; it's an educational journey, a commitment to the environment, and a nod to the Sustainable Development Goals. By cultivating environmental consciousness, promoting the circular economy, and aligning with global sustainability objectives, paves the way for a greener, more sustainable future. Through this innovative kit, not only nurtures plants but also nurtures the future stewards of our planet, ensuring that sustainability becomes a way of life for generations to come.

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide, and in 2023, the State of Selangor is organizing the event at the Setia Alam Convention Center from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To enhance the celebration, additional activities, including a coloring contest and a snake and ladder contest, were organized. Secret Recipe, a strategic partner of the Selangor Environment Department, participated in the event, providing prizes for the contest and offering 800 muffins, 200 plant starter kits, and a variety of spider plants to program participants for free. This modest contribution aims to foster stronger connections within society, with the hope of encouraging more sustainable daily living.

Every year, National Primary Schools throughout the Klang Valley celebrate Universal Children's Day on November 20, 2023. For Taman Klang Utama National School, the celebration was held on November 24, 2023. In connection with this, Secret Recipe Manufacturing has generously provided 1000 chocolate muffins and 5 Chocolate Indulgence cakes for the students.
The celebration also includes some special cakes for the Autistic Children of the school and birthday celebrations were also held for students born in November, accompanied by an entertaining choir performance by the students.
Secret Recipe hopes that the presence of these chocolate muffins will add to the joy in the hearts of these children as they celebrate their day.

The situation of food waste in Malaysia has become very serious, leading to the establishment of the Lost Food Project organization to deal with this important issue. Vegetables and fruits that aren't sold at the wholesale market are sent to the TLFP warehouse for careful sorting and separating the spoiled ones from the good ones. After sorting, these fresh produce items are given to communities in need, such as welfare homes, orphanages, and the vulnerable B40 group.

Realizing the urgency of dealing with food waste, Secret Recipe Environmental Team gathered on February 15th, 2024, to understand and carry out this sorting process effectively. This action highlights the importance of community efforts in fighting food waste and ensuring that extra produce goes to those who need it most.

Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) is one of the organizations known for its programs and efforts in increasing environmental awareness. Therefore, on March 9th and 10th, 2024, Secret Recipe has been invited to join in raising awareness among the people around Tanjung Tuan and Port Dickson. Secret Recipe has sponsored a total of 20kg of organic fertilizer produced from food waste in the factory for the Merbau tree planting activity on those days. Additionally, there are beach cleaning activities, raptor watches, and games aimed at increasing environmental awareness.

The Kuala Lumpur State Department of Environment (JASWPKL) has held several environmental awareness programs in conjuction of the 2024 Earth Day Celebration at the Kuala Lumpur State Level. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 every year by people in 192 countries around the world. Year 2024 is the 54th Earth Day celebration with a theme "Planet vs Plastics". The Enviro Fun - Trail is a program designed to increase the level of awareness and commitment in achieving sustainable development by taking into account relationship between people, resources, nature and development. Enviro Fun-Trail aims to inspired participant in order to appreciate the nature and promote healthy lifestyle practices. Secret Recipe are one of the strategic partners sponsoring this program.

Secret Recipe took part in an electronic waste collection program together with UiTM Environmental Friends Club in collaboration with Selangor’s Environment Department, Kampung Padang Jawa Community Management Council and T-Pot. A trash to cash program where an educational talk was conducted with the residents of the Padang Jawa community to learn more about the importance of managing electronic waste.

29 May 2024, WP Kuala Lumpur - The Department of Environment of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (JASWPKL) has participated in the Environmental Awareness Programme in conjunction with the World Environment Day Celebration 2024 at the International Islamic College, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The programme was officiated by Yang Berusaha Puan Zuraini binti Ahmad Tajudin, Director of JASWPKL and accompanied by Tuan Shaik Faridhudheen Anverdeen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of International Islamic College, Tuan Hafiz Ahmed Patwari, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Academic and Puan Arlina Rohaizey binti Mohamad Amdan, Manager of Certified Centre and lecturers of the International Islamic College.

The programme, organised in collaboration with TM Enviro Industries Sdn. Bhd. and Secret Recipe Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. and the event was attended by 200 college students, lecturers and staff. Various interesting activities were held such as talks on E-Waste Management Mechanism, E-Waste Collection Programme, exhibition and interactive video screening through Virtual Reality tools, and testing the participants' basic knowledge on e-waste through interactive games and quizzes. Hopefully, this programme will provide useful experience and exposure especially to the youth on the importance of e-waste management to our environmental balance.

On July 9th, 2024, Secret Recipe was given the opportunity to be the main contributor to the sports program for special children's schools in the Petaling Jaya area. This sports program took place at the Panasonic Shah Alam Sports Complex. On August 12, 2024, a sports event was held among special needs schools throughout Selangor. Secret Recipe, with a strong commitment to these children, was honored to sponsor the event by contributing 180 muffins to bring joy to their faces on this special occasion. The event took place at the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang Stadium in Selayang Baru and spanned three days.

As part of our program with Ecogarage we joined the schools SMK Lembah Subang and USJ 13 on a mangrove clean up and tree planting in Mangrove Point. We helped supervise and assist the students in clearing up trash before preparing a place for tree planting.

On 27th August, 25 Secret Recipe staff members participated in an event organised by the Lost Food Project. From 11 am to 2 pm.

After gathering together at Block 32 PPR Jalan Loke Yew, we worked together to assemble the giveaway bags containing with food and drinks to about a 100 families who came to collect from our station. Additionally, we also distributed 200 slices of Carrot Slice to residents as well.

This event helped get our group with valuable CSR experience and strengthened our partnership with Lost Food Project as we look forward to another event in the future.

Secret recipe sponsored HopeWW during their Good Earth Run event 2024 on 8th September. At Taman Perdana Botanical garden in Shah Alam, we participated in Hope WW Good Earth Run for the 3km walk. Also sponsored up to 233 potted plants as prizes for those who completed the run, as part of green awareness, along with 755 plastic cups to be used as pots for the upcycling event.

On October 2, 2024, at the MPSJ Secret Recipe Complex, we had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful program organised by MPSJ, which takes place every Wednesday throughout the year. A total of 30 students from SK Puchong Utama took part in this initiative.
The event offered engaging activities aimed at sparking creativity and environmental awareness among young participants. For example, a bowling game using recycled materials encouraged the children to explore ways to repurpose everyday objects, while an exhibition of creations made from bottle caps highlighted the potential for waste to be transformed into useful and artistic items. These activities not only entertained the participants but also imparted valuable lessons on sustainability, inspiring them to make environmentally conscious choices in the future.

October 12th, 2024, the Selangor Department of Environment, in partnership with UiTM's environmental collaborators, organised a beach cleanup event along the coast of Remis Beach. This initiative is part of weekly environmental activities held to celebrate the nation's environmental day, which is recognized globally. The event drew over 50 participants, including representatives from the Department of Environment, UiTM’s environmental partners, Secret Recipe, Canon, and Shanghai Electrical. The program included a competition for collecting the most trash, along with a lucky draw to make the event more festive. Around 231.82 kg of waste was cleared

In conjunction with National Environment Day (HASN) 2024, the Department of Environment for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (JASWPKL) hosted a celebration program at 12 public recreational parks around Kuala Lumpur. One of the major events held to commemorate National Environment Day is the 12-kilometer Trail Run, organized as part of the month-long celebration. This exciting event took place on November 3, 2024, at the Paya Indah Wetlands, starting at 7:30 a.m. and concluding at 10:30 a.m.

Secret Recipe proudly served as one of the key sponsors for the event, contributing to its success. In support of the initiative, Secret Recipe distributed 100 units of organic compost to promote sustainable practices and 60 delicious chocolate muffins to energize the participants. Additionally, the company sponsored jerseys for the committee members, ensuring they had the gear to represent their hard work throughout the event.

Star ESG held it’s summit inviting various representatives for panel talks and to highlight case studies for the importance of ESG in businesses including sustainable development goals, climate change mitigation and adaptation etc. Panel discussions, keynote speeches, stream sessions and interactive networking for information exchange took place with various topics covered such as digital sustainability and sustainable trade.

To support this, Secret Recipe donated around 300 packets of compost and 50 vegetable starter kits for visitors during the event.

The Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) Anniversary Celebration took place at Dewan Masyarakat Taman Sri Sentosa. The event was held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with 500 muffins prepared for the occasion and sponsored by Secret Recipe. From Awareness to Action: Anti-Dengue Gotong Royong and Family Activities

On Sunday, December 15, 2024, an anti-dengue program was held at the Dedap Kota Damansara apartment complex. This important initiative, organised by UiTM students, aimed to raise awareness and encourage preventive measures against dengue fever. The event was generously sponsored by well-known companies such as Secret Recipe, F&N, Kao, NSK, and Amsteel Mills, all of which contributed to supporting this community-focused effort.

As part of the program, informative talks and training sessions were conducted by experts from BOMBA (the Fire and Rescue Department) and the Ministry of Health, who provided valuable insights on dengue prevention and safety measures. Additionally, the event featured a community clean-up activity, or Gotong Royong, to help eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and reduce the spread of the disease.

Participants also engaged in the planting of fragrant lemongrass, known for its natural ability to repel mosquitoes, further contributing to the overall goal of creating a healthier environment. To make the event more enjoyable for families, a children's colouring contest was held, fostering community involvement and raising awareness among younger generations about the importance of dengue prevention. This comprehensive program successfully educated, engaged, and empowered the community to take action in the fight against dengue fever.

Secret recipe with 20 volunteers took part in a tree planting program hosted by both AIESEC and Free Tree Society. Together we planted around the lakeside of Nottingham Malaysia Campus as part of a collaborative effort to increase environmental awareness.

Program Mesra Rakyat was held on 23 February 2025 at Dataran Anak Muda, Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya, with 500 attendees. The event had many fun activities for families. There was a colouring contest for kids, where prizes were given to the best entries. A petting zoo allowed visitors to interact with animals, and free blood pressure checks were available for everyone.

Participants learned how to use the TNB app to manage electricity services, and staff helped with Air Selangor bill payments. A lucky draw gave away exciting prizes, and mechanics provided free motorcycle oil and filter changes.

There were also board games and fun games for families to enjoy, along with futsal and netball matches for some friendly competition.
Secret Recipe kindly donated 100 packs of organic compost and 300 muffins, which were given away for free. The event was a great success, creating fun memories for all.

Secret Recipe Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. recently partnered with Jabatan Alam Sekitar Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur to organize a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event on 14 March 2025. In celebration of the holy month of Ramadhan, the company generously supported Rumah Perlindungan Nur Qaseh in Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur, by providing food donations to the shelter's residents.
This initiative aimed to ensure that the children at the shelter could enjoy a fulfilling and blessed Ramadhan, despite the challenges they may face. As the holy month approaches, it is essential to remember those who may not have the means to provide for themselves. This CSR program serves as a way to give back to the community, demonstrate solidarity, and ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, can experience a meaningful Ramadhan.

A team of 20 volunteers from Secret Recipe visited Dignity Farm Academy in Bentong for a guided tour of the organic farm's initiatives towards sustainability. During the visit, we were able to see firsthand the impact of our partnership, including how Secret Recipe donated food waste is used in their composting program and how leftover cake sponge contributes to their chicken feed.
The farm also arranged a series of hands-on activities, such as tree planting (using trees donated by Secret Recipe), vegetable transplant to plant beds, and turning over compost. It was an engaging and meaningful experience, with everyone enjoying the moment and gaining valuable insights.
This program not only deepened our understanding of sustainable farming but also helped strengthen the bonds between Secret Recipe members and our partners at the farm.

Ocean Festival 2025 - Secret Recipe Supports a Sustainable Ocean Future

The Ocean Festival 2025, sponsored by Secret Recipe, was held from 13 to 15 June 2025 at Cherating Beach, Pahang. The event ran daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM, bringing people together to celebrate the ocean and raise awareness about marine protection.
There were many fun and meaningful activities for all ages. Visitors explored the Eco Bazaar, joined the Hash Run for the Ocean, and took part in water activities like Stand-Up Paddle Boarding and the Paddle Battle. The festival also featured a Karaoke Competition, a lively Fire Dance, and creative workshops such as Paint Your Tote Bag, a Ceramic Workshop, and a Coloring Contest for kids.
This festival wasn’t just about fun. It was also about sending a message. The ocean is important to all of us. It gives life, inspires us, and connects the world. But today, the ocean is in danger. In Malaysia, it is being harmed by pollution, too much fishing, and the destruction of marine habitats.
The Ocean Festival was a call to action. It reminded us that we must protect the ocean before it’s too late. Together, we can make a difference for the future of our seas.

On the 8th of July, a team of volunteers took part in The Lost Food Project’s newest program, donating essential supplies to an Orang Asli community in Rawang. After collecting and preparing the food for transport, we assisted in distributing it to the families gathered in the community.
We also had the opportunity to meet the community leaders. This meaningful engagement not only boosted company morale but also helped us build positive relationships with the local community and strengthen our partnership with The Lost Food Project.

On July 13, 2025, the Department of Environment of Selangor organized the state-level Environmental Awareness Day, which was held continuously in rural areas throughout the weekends in July. Secret Recipe was invited to contribute to the program as one of the participating organisations. A total of 300 chocolate muffins were distributed, and 200 compost packs were given out for free to program participants and local villagers.
The event took place at the Balairaya Kampung Salak Tinggi, starting at 7:30 AM and ending at 1:00 PM. The ceremony featured various environmental awareness activities, and small kiosks were set up to support local vendors in generating income.

A Meaningful Step Toward a Greener Selangor

On 24 May 2025, we at Secret Recipe were proud to take part in the Trail Run 2.0 2025, held in conjunction with the Selangor State-level Environmental Day Celebration at the breathtaking Paya Indah Wetlands, Dengkil, Selangor. The event brought together communities, organizations, and nature lovers in a meaningful effort to promote environmental awareness, healthy living, and inclusivity.

The day began early, with registration starting at 6:00 AM and the official flag-off at 7:00 AM, sending participants on a scenic run through one of Selangor’s most cherished ecological sites. With over 300 participants in total, the energy and spirit of the event were truly inspiring.

Secret Recipe was honored to contribute to this initiative, not only by having 30 of our dedicated staff join the run, but also through our role as one of the event’s main sponsors. We contributed RM5,000 in support of the program and took the opportunity to sponsor the participation fees for special needs individuals from the OKU The Incredible Warrior NGO, reinforcing our commitment to accessibility and community engagement.

In line with the environmental theme, we also distributed 350 packs of our Secret Recipe organic compost to participants, encouraging eco-friendly practices beyond the event. It was our way of sharing sustainable habits that can start small right at home.

The success of Trail Run 2.0 was made possible through collaboration with respected partners including Perhilitan, RAS UiTM, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and the Department of Environment Selangor. Together, we shared a vision for a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive Selangor.

Participating in Trail Run 2.0 2025 was more than just a corporate initiative for us it was a reflection of our values and a reaffirmation of our role in nurturing both people and the planet. We thank everyone who made the event a success, and we look forward to more opportunities where we can grow together for our communities, and for our environment.

On 27/10/2020, the Department of Environment (DOE) issued an E-Waste collection program which Secret Recipe took part in. E-Waste was compiled from the factory and from individual staff and then passed over to the DOE for collection.

Secret Recipe is committed towards using clean energy at our factory in which we have installed Solar Panels on top of our main factory building. By utilising renewable energy, we are able to significantly reduce energy usage from TNB, as well as make changes equivalent to social contributions like CO2​ ​ reduction, standard coal savings, and planting trees.

Waste Segregations

Waste Segregations

The Company produces a few tonnes of waste on a daily basis, with half of it being recycled waste which is segregated by our dedicated staff everyday before being sent to external contractors for further process. Secret Recipe also has implemented colour coded recycling bins in which red bins are for metals, yellow for plastics and blue for paper. The company encourages the staff to dispose of their trash properly through yearly briefing. All other waste from the production is also properly managed before being transported to landfills for proper disposal.

Scheduled Waste Collection in Secret Recipe

Secret Recipe is involved in mass-producing various types of cakes and meals. As a food manufacturing company, scheduled waste wasn’t significant compared to Electronic, Steel or Chemical Manufacturing. Despite that, Secret Recipe has its’ own scheduled waste storage facility and segregation managed by a representative, who also notifies the Department of Environment regarding collection by the scheduled waste contractor and transporter. 2 types of scheduled waste can be found at Secret Recipe Manufacturing being Electronic Waste (SW110) and Spent Fluorescent Lights (SW109). All departments use electronics and machinery, and once broken, parts are disposed of and collected by technicians to be sent to storage for collection by the contractor. Electronic waste such as weighing scales, infra-red thermometers and other electronics used by other departments are sent directly to storage by the department supervisor. Secret Recipe’s current goal is to eliminate all fluorescent light usage and to replace them with led lights, in order to conserve energy usage for a better eco-friendly environment.

Solid Waste Management
All waste collected at our factories in both Kota Damansara and Taman Mayang are properly segregated by an effective waste management company, which is dedicated towards achieving Zero Waste. All recyclables are properly managed at their waste facility, plastics shredded then upcycled to make new products.
Scheduled waste is collected and treated properly by a licenced company which strives towards environmental industrial standards and also commits towards DOE, thus highlighting our responsibility in end to end projects.

Communications and training with staff are conducted in regards to environmental awareness and taking ownership of working areas as well as responsibilities. Environmental Bulletin boards have also been set up to highlight how we are keeping up to date with current environmental situations as well measures implemented by other groups in order to address them. By instilling our staff with environmental awareness and highlighting its importance they can be more liable to take action both within and outside the work area, as well as even help to educate others as well including friends and family.

The area around the factory is given more greenery to provide a much more welcoming environment to its staff as well as highlight our new green direction. Partnership with a landscaping group and its expertise has enabled the garden to flourish well using organic fertiliser and regular upkeep.

The concept of upcycling is also applied in the garden, where unwanted or unused materials ranging from old food containers, tyres or pallets are upcycled and repurposed to highlight our own resourcefulness. It also helps reduce our disposal costs as we have less solid waste to throw away.

Rainwater Harvesting
A rainwater harvesting dunkee is installed at one of the outside toilets, where rainwater runoff is collected off the rooftops and for future usage. It can be used to increase awareness to both staff and visitors on water conservation as well as reduce costs as well as water usage.

Sensor Lighting
Motion sensor lighting is implemented in certain areas which aren’t frequently visited, which helps to reduce energy consumption. Several of the factory’s cold rooms and freezers also have sensors installed, to ensure that lights are switched off as well when the doors are closed and no one is present.

With accordance with Environmental Quality Act, 1974, Secret Recipe Manufacturing is also committed to play its part in taking care of the environment. The company has dedicated staff and is well equipped with its own wastewater treatment plant. No untreated water will be discharged from the factory productions, in fact, the company’s water output is so clean that it can be reused for amenities such as daily housekeeping and chemical mixing.

Secret Recipe Manufacturing is also transparent in its undertaking towards environmental excellence. An Environmental Compliance Board is displayed in front of the main entrance into the factory, which is updated regularly so that all of its staff are aware of the company’s mission to protect the environment and to make sure no pollution is discharged into public drains, providing a sense of ownership and responsibility. Other efforts include using discharging treated water to rare live fish in order to show that the water is perfectly safe.

A project in which we donate our leftover sponge mix to the needy. The team will collect once a week to be distributed to different community centers and orphanages. The distribution of the food is done by the Lost Food Project team. However due to Covid 19, the collection has been postponed temporarily.

We have also developed a compost room right next to scheduled waste storage, where our food waste is reduced to an extent through collection and compost with other organic materials like cardboard and dead leaves on site to produce organic compost and fertiliser. Which can be used for landscaping and improving plant growth and health.

For plant cultivation, we are planning to cultivate more so that we can give to other people or we can give to DOE to plant at the river trailing event.

Secret Recipe supplies food waste such as egg shells, fruit and vegetable peels from production to various organic farms for free collection. Conducted twice every week to help reduce the amount of our food waste to be disposed of at landfills where they can be utilized in permaculture practices such as organic composting practices, mulch or as animal feed.

Secret Recipe have engaged with an organic farm named Tumasek in Segamat, as part of a circular economy initiative. Secret Recipe sponsored organic compost and food waste for the farm to use in organic farming practices so they can grow many types of vegetable crops such as serai and ginger in the hopes of one day being able to order from them at a competitive price. As well as open up channels for education with the local residents of Segamat as part of a new ESG initiative. Secret Recipe have also sponsored the development of a composting pit system to utilise our organic food waste which we send as material.

Working with Green building companies, Secret Recipe is able to lower its energy costs in heating and lighting. The reason is that the right tint will be able to maximise natural daylight while also reducing heat as well. The tinting used in some Secret Recipe outlets is now officially recognized as a ‘Green Product’ by the Malaysian authorities.

Majority of our paper products used in our outlets and offices which include our paper bags and even printing paper are supplied by forest certified companies, which manage their production carefully from sustainably managed forest sources and treating its own waste effectively at the end. This means that they are responsibly made and the process of producing these items will not compromise the our natural resources.

Transforming Food Waste into Sustainable Solutions

Secret Recipe has engaged with Atoz, a group dedicated to circular economic systems. Atoz begins by collecting large amounts of food waste from Secret Recipe to be used as black soldier fly feed, and in turn, said fly larvae are used to generate organic frass/fertiliser, which are highly effective in growing plants and crops. At the same time said larvae make highly organic animal feed for livestock or pet food by processing the food waste and ensuring nothing is wasted. For example, chickens supported with this organic system have been shown to have larger and higher quality eggs.

Atoz is also working on experimenting with or developing microalgae products, which are effective in carbon capture as well as to be used in organic animal feed. Secret Recipe has also taken part in some of their public appearances by sponsoring them with our compost or vegetable growing kits and looking forward to engaging with them in future collaboration.

The results of Secret Recipe air emissions test in the boiler chimneys, dust concentrations and gas emissions were found to comply with Malaysian Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulation 2014 after being tested by environmental consultants. Smoke opacity also complied with Ringelmann Chart No. 1.
